Career Support and Paths after CHAM

CHAM offers comprehensive career development resources to support pediatric residents throughout their training.

Mentorship and Coaching

Each resident begins intern year with a Program Director or Associate Program Director Coach, meeting regularly to provide individualized guidance, review career growth, and ensure the transition from medical student to resident to pediatrician is supported and tailored to the resident’s individual goals and needs.

By the end of intern year, residents identify additional faculty and research mentors to provide targeted support for their evolving career and personal goals.

Preparation for the Board Exam

A robust Board Preparation Curriculum runs longitudinally during the year and includes:

  • Chief led Board Review before Academic Half-Day
  • Subject specific Board Review sessions from February to June
  • Sessions on test-taking anxiety and test-taking strategy
  • Study tips from recent CHAM graduates
  • MedStudy question bank access for all PGY-3 residents with assigned questions through the year tailored to prior CHAM resident performance gaps

Networking and Alumni Engagement

CHAM leverages its extensive network to facilitate connections with alumni through events such as CHAM Alumni Day and resident focused career panels.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the large number of recent graduates who make themselves available for guidance and networking opportunities. CHAM residents benefit from the large number of alumni that stay in the Montefiore Einstein system as well as our alumni across the country and professional spectrum who take pride in bringing their experience and insights back to the CHAMily.

Fellowship Support

Residents are offered guidance from Program Leadership and their own mentors through the entire application process. Program leadership is available to review every fellowship application and hold virtual practice interviews.

Residents are guaranteed to meet CHAM alumni along their interview trail and many recent graduates encourage residents to reach out during the process for insights and advice.

Primary Care Career Support

Primary Care Career Panels are held throughout the year to connect residents with recent alumni who share insights into primary care careers post-residency. As the job market for pediatricians is constantly changing, a Jobs Bulletin with curated career opportunities is distributed periodically along with guidance and insights from alumni and faculty.  As an additional resource, residents are always invited to discuss a career in general pediatrics with Suzette O. Oyeku, MD, MPH, Chief, Academic General Pediatrics, who oversees the network of Montefiore Einstein general pediatrics practices, for high-level insights on navigating the job market and interview process.

New Upcoming Initiative – Chiefs Café…2026

The Chief’s Café is a near peer resident-driven initiative designed to support education, wellness, professional development, and research in a flexible, informal setting.

  • Offers a conversational, peer-focused environment with refreshments (because everyone can use a coffee).
  • Topics are presented as a “menu,” allowing residents to select sessions tailored to their individual needs and interests.
  • Aims to provide resources and mentorship in areas often under-addressed by formal curricula, recognizing that residency training encompasses more than clinical duties alone.
