PEDIATRIC ACADEMIC SOCIETIES ANNUAL MEETING: NEW RESEARCH DEMONSTRATES EFFECTS OF COVID-19 ON CHILDREN WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES

Montefiore-Einstein Research on Social Needs Screening and Adverse Childhood Events Will Also Be Presented 

NEW YORK (April 28, 2021) – At this year’s Pediatric Academic Societies (PAS) Virtual Meeting, clinical investigators from the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine will present findings on how the COVID-19 pandemic has effected children with autism, asthma, eating disorders, developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. In addition, investigators will present research on screening children for unmet social needs and adolescent resilience and depression.

During Phase I of PAS – Friday, April 30 – Tuesday, May 4:

  • Dr. Natasha Nayak will discuss the prevalence and predictors of eating disorders in an urban pediatric emergency department. Poster #716
  • Dr. Esther Kibakaya will highlight how adolescents exposed to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can find support and resilience to buffer depression. Poster #1032
  • Dr. Nisha Shah will describe how NSAIDs impact length of stay for obese and non-obese children hospitalized with acute asthma exacerbations. Poster #549
  • Dr. Audrey Uong will describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric providers who cared for adult patients during the surge in New York. Poster #1303
  • Dr. Fahmida Islam will describe how social needs screening during a child’s hospitalization can be implemented. Platform presentation #2325-PL-QA.6

During Phase II of the annual meeting, from Monday, May 10 – Friday, June 4, Montefiore & Einstein faculty are leading career development sessions on topics including, peer mentorship, negotiations and leadership presence, as well as leading advocacy workshops on gun violence prevention and LGBTQ health and well-being.
