The Specialized Program for Abdominal pain Resources in Kids (SPARK) offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the care of children, adolescents, and young adults with chronic abdominal pain. These conditions, often referred to as disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBI), include irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia, functional abdominal pain, abdominal migraine, and other related disorders. They are among the most common chronic conditions seen in pediatric gastroenterology and affect children and adolescents across all ages and backgrounds.
Effective management of these conditions requires a comprehensive, integrative approach that addresses both physical symptoms and their impact on daily life. Our program is designed to improve symptom control, restore function, and enhance overall quality of life.
Our Approach
At SPARK, patients (ages 7–21) and their families are seen by an expert team consisting of a pediatric gastroenterologist and a pediatric psychologist during the same visit. This coordinated evaluation allows for a thorough, collaborative, and individualized care plan tailored to each patient’s needs.
The program is led by Rachel Borlack, MD, pediatric gastroenterologist and Director of the Neurogastroenterology and Motility Program at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Borlack specializes in chronic abdominal pain and disorders of gut–brain interaction and has advanced training in integrative therapies, including hypnotherapy and auricular acupressure.
She is joined by Caryn Rodgers, PhD, a pediatric psychologist with extensive experience supporting children and families managing chronic and complex medical conditions. Dr. Rodgers specializes in evidence-based mind–body interventions for pediatric chronic pain and symptom management.
