Pediatric General Surgery

Our comprehensive, child-oriented, family-centered approach prepares children for hospitalization and surgery and enlists their parents' support through education about the child's condition.Pediatric Surgical Services at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore (CHAM) is one of the only few full service surgical departments in the region devoted exclusively to children's care.

Our multidisciplinary team creates a treatment plan for each child. We also utilize a comprehensive, child-oriented, family-centered approach that arms parents with the information about their child's condition to help both children and their families prepare for hospitalization and surgery.

Pediatric General Surgery

Conditions range from the common surgical illnesses of childhood to the most complex conditions. Patients may be sent to us for evaluation, testing, consultation or treatment. In conjunction with the pediatric emergency physicians in the CHAM Emergency Department, we also treat patients with urgent conditions and illnesses or injuries requiring immediate attention 24 hours/7 days a week.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Examples of minimally invasive surgery and conditions treated include:

  • Appendectomy
  • Cholecystectomy
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Ovarian Tumor
  • Thoracic/mediastinal

Neonatal Surgery

In collaboration with the Neonatal Division/ NICU at Montefiore and the Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine our surgeons provide prenatal consultation and advice to ensure that your newborn will get the best care before and after birth.

High Risk Surgery and Critical Care

Our medical and surgical specialists offer surgical care for children with complex illnesses who require pre- and postoperative services, in conjunction with consulting physicians and pediatric intensivists. These patients are usually treated in the Pediatric Critical Care Unit. Services include Management of Trauma, ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). ECMO is an artificial lung that delivers oxygen to a child who is nonresponsive to conventional respiratory therapy, allowing the lung more time to be treated.

Oncologic Surgery

This service works in close collaboration with our Pediatric Hematology and Oncology physicians, and sees patients referred for consultation, biopsy, primary resection, secondary surgery, follow-up care or adjuvant treatment of solid tumors. We are also surgical consultants to national study groups, making the latest advances in surgical oncology available to our patients, and we are an institutional member of the national Children's Oncology Group, with access to the latest and most advanced treatments and trials.

Gastrointestinal Surgery

Our experts offer specialized surgical treatment for acquired or congenital gastrointestinal conditions in conjunction with pediatric gastroenterologists. The team treats Hirschsprungs* disease — a disease of the large intestine that causes severe constipation or intestinal obstruction, short bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and other feeding intolerance.  The comprehensive competencies will offer to your children the best innovative treatments.

Hepatobiliary Surgery

Hepatobiliary surgery encompasses treatment for the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder. Our dedicated team of international clinicians evaluates and manages virtually every complication of the liver and biliary tract, ranging from congenital abnormalities to tumors that may require surgery. Some common treatments are for:

  • Biliary atresia - Choledochal cysts
  • Liver tumor - Hepatoblastoma- Hepatocarcinoma
  • Metabolic Disease

Our team includes experts in pediatric liver disease, hepatobiliary surgeons offering the full spectrum of procedures from Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) Liver resection, hepatobiliary reconstruction and liver transplantation.

Adolescent Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery is a term that refers to surgical procedures used to reduce the size of the stomach and promote weight loss in patients who are severely overweight. The Adolescent Bariatric Surgery Program at The Children's Hospital at Montefiore provides comprehensive and multidisciplinary care for patients 16-21 years of age whose health is affected by their weight both before and after surgery. Day Surgery

More than half of the procedures/treatments that used to require overnight stay in the hospital are now day procedures including:

  • Cholecystectomy
  • Hernia-All types
  • Small tumor excision
  • Central venous access
  • Gastrostomy tube insertion
