Our health center benefits from feedback from a dedicated community advisory board, whose members offer meaningful input regarding how our hospitals and major ambulatory care sites can improve service delivery to diverse communities.

Newly opened in 2011, the Center for Child Health and Resiliency (CCHR) at the South Bronx Health Center provides comprehensive health care to infants, children and adolescents through 21 years of age.

CCHR has a special focus on early childhood development beginning prenatally through 5 years of age. The latest scientific research in child development demonstrates that stress to the fetus and young infant, that is not properly buffered, may lead to disruptions in brain architecture that can permanently affect a child's brain development and future capacity for self-regulation and learning. Children who are exposed to chronic stress related to poverty, exposure to violence, or other environmental factors are at risk for lifelong health problems like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease and learning disabilities. By developing nurturing and protective relationships with their children, parents can help build protective factors that mitigate these stressors and increase resiliency allowing children to reach their full potential.

CCHR will continue to provide excellence in comprehensive primary care and treat chronic conditions like asthma and obesity that are disproportionate in the community served. Our programming includes innovative group prenatal and well baby care as well as new programs to increase access to services that support families and equip parents with the nurturing skills needed to overcome stressors detrimental to children's healthy development.

SBHC/CCHR is one of the flagship programs of Children's Health Fund, a national organization that develops comprehensive health care programs for medically underserved children and families and advocates for access to health services for all children.
