Our Pediatric Hematology team provides expert, family-centered care for children with non-malignant blood disorders. Our multidisciplinary team offers advanced diagnosis, innovative treatments, and comprehensive support for conditions such as thalassemia, iron deficiency anemia, and other complex hematologic diseases. Through collaboration across specialized programs including IV Iron Infusion Therapy, the Hematology–Neurovascular Clinic, and the Transformative Therapies Program we are dedicated to improving outcomes and enhancing quality of life for every child.
Thalassemia
Thalassemia is a group of inherited blood disorders that affect the body’s ability to make healthy red blood cells and hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen throughout the body. People with thalassemia may experience anemia, fatigue, or other complications depending on the type and severity of their condition. With expert care and regular monitoring, most individuals with severe thalassemia will lead healthy, active lives.

Our Team
CHAM provides comprehensive, compassionate, multimodal and individualized care to children with beta thalassemia, alpha thalassemia and other thalassemia syndromes.  A team of dedicated hematologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, psychologists and child life therapists work closely together to bring innovative care to each of our patients from birth through adulthood. We offer red cell transfusions, chelation therapy and the newly FDA approved gene therapies.

IV Iron Infusion Therapy
For children and adolescents with iron deficiency anemia who do not respond to oral iron or cannot tolerate it, we offer intravenous (IV) iron infusions in a comfortable, child-friendly setting. IV iron allows for faster replenishment of iron stores and improvement in energy and well-being within the close supervision of our pediatric hematology infusion clinic.

Hematology-Neurovascular Clinics
Children with blood disorders, especially sickle cell disease, are at increased risk for brain vessel abnormalities such as moyamoya, vasculopathy, and aneurysms. Our multidisciplinary Hematology–Neurovascular Clinic brings together experts in hematology, neurology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, and interventional radiology to provide coordinated, comprehensive care. The team meets monthly to review brain imaging and develop individualized management plans, ensuring each patient receives the highest level of care.

Transformative Therapies Program
Our team offers curative and emerging treatments for sickle cell disease and other blood disorders, including bone marrow transplantation and gene therapy. We meet monthly with our multidisciplinary team including social work, psychology, and gene therapy specialists to evaluate eligible patients and provide comprehensive emotional and social support throughout the process. We actively collaborate with pharmaceutical partners to bring cutting-edge clinical trials to our patients and work closely with our fertility specialists to address reproductive health before and after treatment.
