The Center for Excellence in Autism

Approximately 1 in 68 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder. It most notably impairs sociability and empathy, imagination and play, and language development and communication.

Currently there are no medical tests to diagnose autism or distinguish it from other developmental disorders–especially epilepsy, inadequate language development, attention problems, and sensorimotor abnormalities.

Children with autism also have problems associated with rigidity and repetitive movements, as well as obsessions, and narrow interests and activities. These overlaps in behavior and development gaps can complicate diagnosis and treatment decisions.
