Childhood Cancer Predisposition (CCP) Clinic

The Childhood Onco-Genetics clinic at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore is a collaboration between the Division of Clinical Genetics, and the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Cellular Therapy. It consists of two oncologists, one geneticist, one genetic counselor, one nurse practitioner, and a social worker. Patients seen in this clinic are evaluated for pediatric cancer predisposition syndromes.

Pediatric cancer predisposition syndromes are heritable conditions that put an individual at an elevated risk to develop cancer in their lifetime. Majority of the time, a patient can be diagnosed with a cancer predisposition syndrome by participating in genetic testing.

Some common features associated with pediatric cancer predisposition include family history of the same or related cancer/tumor; multifocal or bilateral tumors; patient with more than one primary cancer, clinical features of a cancer predisposition syndrome (history of cancer + additional features like macrocephaly, autism, café au lait macules, etc); or a cancer occurring at a younger age than typically seen.

Within our clinic we provide the following services

  • Discuss and coordinate genetic testing to diagnose cancer predisposition syndromes
  • Explain to families the genetic test results, the diagnosis, additional cancer/tumor risks, and recommended surveillance
  • Arrange and order appropriate surveillance
  • Review family history and offer genetic testing to at risk family members
  • Offer support and guidance to families

The goal of this clinic is to identify patients with a genetic predisposition, which leads to the following benefits:

  • Provide families with a diagnosis and explanation for their child’s and/or family history of cancer/tumors
  • Provide insight on appropriate cancer surveillance for the patient, which can help identify any cancers/tumors early
  • Prompts at risk family members to get genetic testing, which can impact their cancer screening
  • Information can be used for future family planning
