How old are children who come to Butler Center?

As a medically focused child advocacy center (CAC), we treat the very youngest children, kids who sometimes cannot be seen at other centers. Prosecution-based CACs often cannot treat very young children who may not be credible witnesses in a court of law.

Of all children seen at Butler Center:

  • 48% are age 0-6 years
  • 38% are age 7-12 years
  • 14% are age 13 or older

What's the ethnic makeup of children served at Butler Center?

Of all children seen at Butler Center:

  • 50% are Hispanic/Latino
  • 38% are African American
  • 9% are Biracial/Other Race
  • 2% are Caucasian/White
  • 1% are Asian

What kinds of abuse are treated at Butler Center?

While sexual abuse makes up only 10-12 percent of reported child abuse in the United States, at Butler Center we see more cases of sexual abuse than any other.

Of all cases seen at Butler Center we see:

  • 69% sexual abuse
  • 20% physical abuse
  • 2% neglect or emotional abuse
  • 9% other abuse

Why does Butler Center treat so many sexually abused children?
We see a disproportionate number of sexually abused kids because we have the trained multidisciplinary team and "expertise here to do the work" of difficult forensic examination, explains  Linda Cahill, MD, Butler Center's Medical Director.

Butler Center is a national model for medically based child advocacy
Our pioneering work in cross-disciplinary family assessment, forensic medicine and physician residency training makes us the referral of choice for many New York medical, criminal justice and child welfare professionals.
