    • Dr. Choi has special expertise in the field of pediatric cardiac intensive care. He has a particular interest in the care of postoperative cardiothoracic surgical patients, as well as care for children with complex medical cardiac disease. This includes all neonates, infants, children and adolescents who are admitted to the hospital with critical illness. Dr. Choi has been the medical director and chief of cardiac intensive care services at several institutions. He was the first pediatric cardiac intensivist recruited to Montefiore Medical Center.

    • Dr. Choi's primary research focus centers on healthcare delivery improvement. He has been the co-investigator for several grants aimed at improving clinical outcomes and population health.

    Personal Biography

    Steven J. Choi, MD, FAAP received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He completed his pediatric internship and residency at Babies and Children's Hospital (Columbia University Medical Center) and his pediatric critical care medicine fellowship at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (University of Southern California).

    Prior to joining Montefiore in 2010 and becoming Director of Pediatric Cardiac Inpatient Services, Dr. Choi was Division Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care and Medical Director of the Pediatric Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center (now located at Phoenix Children's Hospital).

    Dr. Choi is a graduate of the world-renowned Intermountain Healthcare–Advanced Training Program for Healthcare Delivery Improvement in Salt Lake City, Utah. He received his Lean Healthcare–Professional Certificate, as well as his Executive Coaching Certificate, from the University of Michigan. He is also a graduate of the Lockheed Martin–Lean Six Sigma program and Northwestern University's Organizational Leadership program.

    Since 2015, Dr. Choi has been responsible for leading the Health System transformation through clinical performance improvement strategies. Dr. Choi trains Montefiore clinicians and leaders in standardized principles and methodologies in improvement science, change management and leadership through the Montefiore Institute for Performance Improvement (MIPI). He also leads the Montefiore Health System Quality Collaborative (MHS-QC), which provides a system-wide collaboration for engagement, expertise and execution of clinical quality, patient safety and operational efficiency initiatives.
